Frustrations with the Grand College of Rites

If you are a member of the Grand College of Rites, you may have some frustration with a seemingly absent recorder and other management. I encourage you to hang in there. I received a communication from someone in the organization explaining the situation. He forwarded me a note from the Grand Chancellor that explains everything.

This is a great organization to be part of. Don’t give up on them. They are just having some transitional problems at the moment and likely these will be cleared up before long. The good side is that there is an opportunity for some brother to become more involved if he wants a good-sized project. I considered throwing my hat in the ring but decided I have enough on my plate for now.

From the Most Illustrious Grand Chancellor:

Our current Grand Recorder has taken a new job which causes him to be out of town most of the time. As a result, we have a large number of members wondering why they aren’t receiving their mailings, or responses to their inquiries. You are not alone.

Over the past few months, we have been searching for a new Grand Recorder, but it isn’t an easy task to find an interested Mason who is willing to drive a U-Haul trailer to Illinois, pack up approximately five dozen boxes of back issues and other records, drive them back to their hometown, and take on the task of becoming the Grand Recorder of the Grand College of Rites.

Unfortunately, we are not an organization that has a brick and mortar office somewhere, and we cannot pay a staff of two or three a full-time salary. That would be great, but we just don’t have the numbers. As a result, we have to rely on one single volunteer who is compensated as much as we can afford.

On the upside, we have two or three applicants for the job, and we hope to have a final decision prior to our Annual Convocation.

All I can do at this point is ask for your continued patience.

Fraternally,

Pierre G. “Pete” Normand, Jr.
Grand Chancellor
Grand College of Rites

I submitted a petition a while ago as I am extremely interested in the symbolism of long dead rites.

I received the same reply and am hoping that my petition comes out of limbo soon.

Still haven’t heard anything. I know convocation is in February. I still have my petition and check floating out there. Should I expect it to be looked at by the end of Feb?

Hi Bro. Steven. I also have not heard from them in some time. I am guessing they still do not have a grand recorder who is to speed. Please have patience. I will needle them at the Masonic Week meeting and see what the scoop is.

Hi Bro. Waleszonia. I have not heard anything back. I just left a comment on the Facebook page but I do not expect to get a reply, since it is Masonic Week this week and probably people are in transit. I recommend giving them some time. They are going through some troubles due to the Grand Recorder’s situation. I have faith that these problems will be worked out this year.

Unfortunately, I have a conflicting meeting on Saturday morning so I will not be able to go to their once-per-year meeting to harass them. I will be there all day Wednesday though, and hope to meet up with someone from the GCR to bend his ear a bit.

Hi Bro. Cline. I am glad you did not throw in the towel and I hope you will be a member for many years.

I do not know Bro. Stimpert’s personal situation but when I joined he was doing a fine job and I understand his time was lessened due to work or other circumstances. He was a great servant to the organization but from time to time all of our cable tows get shortened, often due to reasons beyond our control.

Hi Bro. Roger. Thanks for hanging in there with the GCR and for your service in the Craft. Even when we can’t be with our brothers in person, it is good to have correspondence organizations like the GCR or SCRL to help bring us more light.

May I ask what is the current state of things? I notice today there is no longer a website under the domain name.

I have wished to join but understand the current situation. I am available to assist in some way with admin matters (have 20+ years as a secretary and social media manager), but must first be accepted into membership before I can realistically offer to assist.

I can be reached at 412-353-9075 or by email.
